 "Good nozzle - a bit underwhelming" 2010-01-08
By Matt J.
It works as it should for the most part. I had the chance to try it out quite a few times over the last summer drought. It does flow well but my older Nelson nozzle (can't find model here on Amazon) seems to flow a little batter. If you do not have good pressure to start with then this nozzle, or any nozzle for that matter, is not going to help much. I am lucky with great pressure, so less restrictive nozzles do make a difference. The spray pattern adjustment is more smooth with the Nelson where this one can be touchy with a tendency to overadjust. A good nozzle but definitely not 5-star worthy.

 "breaks after 1 year" 2009-12-28
By Jean Reece (Rochester, NY United States)
Used to have a lifetime warranty, now only 1 year. Another reviewer mentioned they are manufactured in China now - (the arsenic they added to the plastic probably weakened the casing :) Better off paying $5 for a cheaper one and replacing every year or so.

"Sturdy unit. Otherwise just OK." 2009-12-15
By Michael A. Israel (United States)
After reading many of the reviews here, my expectations were probably set too high. Many purchasers have made this thing sound like it sprinkles water from the fountain of youth at pressures to rival Old Faithful.

It is well made and should last many years. Other than that, it sprays out water prett much like any other hose nozzle I have ever used. It is a quality product but I do not understand all the raves.

"Jame's Harvey's Book is a must have for machinist!" 2009-12-16
By Thomas Gendich (Detroit, MI)
We love James Harvey's book, Machine Shop Trade Secrets, here at Metalmite Corporation. Even though we have 41 years of experience with CNC Machining and 4, 5 and 6 axis machining centers, we have found that the foundational knowledge found in Mr. Harvey's book is irreplaceable! I especially like chapter 18 on "Rotary Table Magic"! I think that all of our interns should be given this book to read through first, then we can have something to build from. It is getting harder and harder to find machinist with these skills, but it is quite refreshing to have this handbook as a guide to help the new hire's find the way. [...]

This well-written book deserves lots of accolade for its clear and useful information. Not only machine shop owners and workers, but everybody distantly relevant will find this book a must-have reference in his daily work. In the book, many common-sense, practical and 'obvious' advices and tips are provided generously. The author is good at explaining technical aspects in layman's terms thus making it easy to follow and understand. And the author has a good sense of humor too. One of my favorites is "Blowing chips all over the guy next to you would be an example of a "non-dimensional" mistake that would likely irritate somebody." Seriously, you don't expect you could have some laughs while studying such technical subject like machine shop operation! Yes, book like this surely brighten up your mundane workday.

Washes a 5-lb. load super clean in just a couple of minutes. Has a patented pressure system that forces detergent into the fabric at high speed for a fast, efficient, economic and very easy wash. Is ideal for campers, RVs, apartment living, college dorms, single persons and even for any household with small frequent loads like hand washables and diapers. Is ideal for delicates such as woolens, silks, knitted dresses and cashmere garments. Uses far less water than even hand washing, so its environmentally friendly. Uses hot or cold water. How Does it Work? - When you put warm or hot water into the drum, fit the lid in place and seal the machine, the air inside the drum will absorb the heat of the water and expand (i.e., just like a hot air balloon). When the air expands it creates pressure inside the drum. The pressure forces the detergent (which is diluted into the water) into & through the fabric (which is porous) about 100 times faster than you could by hand or machine. Uses no electricity (hand turn) and therefore economically sound, and great for environment. A great advantage over competitors: drain in bottom for easy drainage & refill rinse.

"Have Used my Wonder Washer 5 months now GREAT" 2010-01-09
By Elizabeth Bennett (Seattle, WA)
I bought a Wonder Washer from Laundry Alternatives, actually I have purchased two. One for a friend who also loves hers.

Regarding the SPUTNIK 3 label - there may be some grounds for confusion over the labeling, but the machine is the exact same, I had them side by side and there is no difference. When the manufacturer changes labels it does cause some confusion.

Now: You put this little machine together, and the idea is for it to spin with the crank handle using warm to hot water and a pressure-sealed top that creates pressure inside, forcing the small about of detergent into the fabric of the clothing. To me, the handle was a bit "iffy," mine came with a screw to be driven into a plastic plug instead of a metal cotter pin. Judging the weight of water plus clothing and the flexibility of the stand, I just took it right back off. If you wash very small loads with no more than one-and-a-half quarts of water, you'll be just fine with the handle. But, I still didn't mark it down for that. I fill the machine about half-full of water, temperature depending on the clothing items, state of soil, etcetera. Then, I have my uppare workout. After the machine is properly loaded and sealed, I put on my 1-pound wrist weights and turn the machine by hand for a count of about 120 - 150 complete rotations, take off the weights, insert the drain and let it drain. Once the water has mainly run out, I remove the top and turn the tub to empty the contents. Quick double rinse in cold water and the wash part it done.

**Here's where the difference comes in. This machine does EXACTLY what it says it will do, clean your clothing and fabric items quickly and simply. They never said it would wring (please - get the spelling right, we don't "ring" clothes) the items for you. I use a SPIN DRYER - makes all the difference!

The soaking, dripping items are plopped right into my "Charming Spinner," spun for a couple of minutes until the water has stopped coming from the spout and then they are ready to be hung up to dry. That's it.

CAPACITY: In my Wonder Washer, I can get one flannel queen-sized bed sheet and one pillow case at a time, meaning my bed clothing takes two cycles to get done.

OR - I can get one pair of flannel lined jeans, two underwear, and a pair of socks.

OR - Regular jeans, one pair plus 3 or 4 men shirts.

OR - One large bath towel plus two T-shirts

Any way, all this to say, I have used the Wonder Washer SOLELY for the last five months to process laundry for two people, only once using the pay washer-dryer for a comforter which is too large to wash by hand and also to large to go into the spin dryer. It has worked for me, and by my nearest calculations my initial out for the Wonder Washer washer and the spin dryer were recouped in 10 weeks.

Now I am shopping for a portable washing machine, electric-style since my new job requires me to commute and I won't have the time to do laundry by hand.

Bottom Line: To me, clothing is personal and processing laundry by hand is very satisfying. The Wonder Washer will be put away for use on weekends when I don't have a daily commute that takes time away from home where I do enjoy housework style working at home. I highly recommend it, treat it gingerly as it is a small hand powered laundry machine, and you'll get good use of it.

 "works but is flimsy" 2009-12-15
By Paul H. Wyand (Plattakill, NY)
I got this a little over a month ago. You really have to crank down on the screw to get the lid tight enough that it will not leak. Once you do that and a few turns and it really gets cloths clean. I was very impressed with how clean they get. I am going to get the spin dryer to go with it and will be laundromat free! It is great for a single person, but if you have more than one I would not try to use it. It might be good for diapers though.

I am afraid that the handle will break off, but I don't think that will reduce the usefulness and the stand is flimsy.

"Can clean but isn't well constructed or all that efficient." 2009-11-21
By Real World User (Dallas, TX)
The Wonder Wash can clean your clothes but except for the tub itself, it is very cheaply constructed and probably won't last long under constant use. And don't buy that your kids will "love" to wash clothes this way, the Wonder Wash is too hard for younger children to use and what teenager is going to "love" to wash clothes? In order to get clean clothes, you will have to drain the Wonder Wash from the top, tipping it quickly to get the dirty water out; otherwise, using the drain, the clothes actually filter the dirt out so the drain water comes out clean and the dirt is back in your clothes. Plus, you still have to manually rinse everything so the water savings is very overstated! As for the amount of detergent you use, the Wonder Wash is limited to how much it can wash at a time, two pairs of jeans fills it, and when you take into account how much you can wash in a normal machine, there is no great detergent savings unless you are foolish enough to follow the manufactures recommended amounts (remember, cleaning is a chemical process aided by physical agitation, if you have suds left in your wash, you had enough detergent (base) to loosen the dirt on the clothes and you don't need anymore detergent than that. You might buy this if you need an non electric clothes washer, but for everyday use you need something else!

"Worked unti it broke... two weeks later." 2009-10-10
By Douglas Leamy (NY, NY)
Living in New York, I saw the Wonderwash as an amazing chance to opt out of the laundromat. I bought the Wonderwash after seeing several similar products online. I was pleased by the results I was getting in terms of cleanliness and ease of use... but two weeks in the handle snapped off. For some reason while the rest of the plastic was relatively heavy duty, the part which would be getting the brunt of the torque from spinning was made of soft, malleable plastic. It squeaked for a bit, then just ripped off. On the plus side, the vendor was great about returning my money!

"Expected More for the Money" 2010-01-12
By Iz
This "portable" washer has no handles, is not available with wheels, is too heavy to lift easily, and the instructions make it clear Haier's lawyer's want it permanently installed. I bought it specifically for portability, so I put it on a dolly.

It is three months old. It has developed an annoying habit of shutting off in the middle of the normal wash cycle. So far, it has been possible to turn the power back on and restart it, but this does not bode well for the future.

The faucet adaptor is easy to apply and remove, but the two pieces slip apart easily. They do not slip back together easily. Trying to do so by hand will create a spectacular water fountain, which you will discover when it sprays halfway across the room. By the time you finish cleaning up the mess, you will enjoy beating the adaptor back into order with a hammer, which is the only way to do it.

You are supposed to level the machine. I did not bother since it gets moved. Therefore I do not blame it for leaking a bit - np - kitchen floors need mopping.

For approximately $200 US, the cycle switch should have worked longer than three months. The adaptor is a pain. And it is annoying that Haier advertises it as portable but means it to be stationary.

If you're in the market for a portable washer, try something cheaper first.

This was a baby shower gift from a friend. My son is now 17 months and it still works great. I absolutely love it. The only problem I have with it is my fault. I have to make sure the drain is anchored in the sink or it floods my kitchen. But it is better than you would expect. Perfect for the new parent in small apartment dwelling. I still am waiting to buy the dryer. A+

The washer capacity is not a problem if you do laundry everyday or every few days. Just remember it's not the type of weekly laundry with tons of clothing. It's a matter of design and habbit.

It's quiet and has different wash programs to fit your needs. Water hose is easy take on and off. You can really move it anywhere easily. Product quality is decent, though not luxurious or perfect in every detail. Plus, it's affordable.

The best deal of this washer is on Walmart with site to store shipping. Use Bing cash back to link to walmart. Target sells this on amazon, although it's a little more expensive.

 "Wonderful little washer" 2009-11-08
By S. Tautkus (Orlando)
I have owned this compact washer for 2 weeks. It was a snap to put together. The bottom pan is clearly marked 'this side out' and 'front' so I don't know why anyone would have any problem. It took me less than 5 minutes to get it set up. Then I washed 4 loads right in succession. It washed sweatshirts, socks and jeans with no problems. I bought this washer with the idea that I can take this in my RV and use it on the road. It is perfect for this. RV specific washers are very expensive and this washer is so light that I can carry it to move it to wash my laundry and put it back in storage out of the way. The only question is the longevity, if that is up to par this was a steal!!!

Ran across this little wonder by accident on line. Got mine used but looked like new with all the accessories (casters, u-hook for drain hose, faucet adapters) in a bag. Did a couple t-shirts, socks, underwear on medium load to test it out. Didn't expect much at all. What a pleasant surprise! The dirtiest of socks was near spotless, I expected wringing wet "drip dries", the shirts were barely damp. Fantastic performance for something this size. Was a tad noisier than I expected but quite tolerable and not annoying. This would be well worth the money, even though I got lucky in finding mine used.

"It just needs a larger load capacity." 2009-12-26
By Shelley
Years ago, back in the early to mid 1960's Sears made a FULL SIZE washer/dryer combo unit. (Lady Kenmore Combo) I loved that machine. It could wash and dry a king size bed spread in about 90/120 minutes, depending on the wash and dry cycles that were chosen. I wish LG would make this unit in a FULL size 4.0 or 4.2 capacity. I'd buy at least 2 in a hart beat. I have 4 front loaders and 3 dryers. (I hate doing laundry) I bought a new Mele washer when they first came out, again a fantastic machine, but very small capacity. Then, I bought a Maytag Neptune front loader, much larger capacity, but could not get a King size bed spread in it. Then, I ended up buying a Sears Ht3 front loader. Finally, a washer that could hold a King size bed spread. However, the Sears machine is a bit noisy, and will shake my floors, if it goes off balance, or I use the high spin cycle. Other then that. It holds a fantastic amount of laundry. The Sears machine is 8 years old now. And I have had no issues, or mechanical problems with it. The quietest of all the washers by far, are the Mele and Maytag. Washer number 4 is a GE front loader from 1962, small capacity, but built like a brick SH. The thing weighs a ton. It was my mothers, so I keep it for sentimental reasons. Great machine for dog towels and through rugs.

As for the LG brand. I know for a fact LG makes excellent Washers and dryers. Metal gears and direct drive. Other brands use plastic gears. But as soon as LG comes out with a FULL size combo machine. I'll be replacing a few single washer and dryer units in my house.

Anyway, This little LG is much better, and holds more then the apartment style top loader stack style units. So its a great machine if you have restricted appliance space, or venting issues.

I would have given the LG five stars. If it hadn't been for the overall capacity. But for a compact/apartment size unit, I give it 8 stars.

By the way. I did take my King size bed spread into Sears, just to make sure it fit in the machine, before I bought it.

"i love this machine, even though it's not perfect" 2009-06-24
By Kato D. (chicago, il USA)
i have been using my lg w/d combo for over a year now. i have a very small condo and lack of space, 220 power and venting were the deciding factors for me. i LOVE not having to take my laundry to the basement and worry about moving the laundry from the washer to the dryer. this machine has worked great for me.

i do more smaller loads now. usually 4-6 loads a week for just one person (and a cat). it rarely takes over 3 hours to wash and dry total and occasionally i choose to dry less time and line dry to finish. i never dry my jeans anyway. and yes, if i wash one towel, 2 wash clothes and a hand towel -- it is full. don't try to cram too much into this machine. it works a lot better with small loads.

i like the delay function so i can set it up in the morning and time it to be done when i get home from work.

things are more linty than a normal dryer. i got a lint roller. but my clothes come out a lot softer than the regular dryer because they're not baked to a crisp. it's a gentler dry.

it has diferent settings for "hand wash" "delicates" and "speed wash" in addition to normal etc.

i really like it. the only real annoyance i have with it, is that the door takes a really long time to unlock after a dry cycle, even after pushing the unlock button.

it is supposedly very water and energy efficient. i recommend the lg WM3431HW.

"ONLY for dwellings that have no venting or washer/dryer hookup" 2008-12-25
By LawyerMom (USA)
After some initial research into the matter, I found out that you would need a special hookup for either a washer or a dryer (you need both water input and a way to dispose of the dirty water without overflowing your pipes) and you need venting for the dryer. The majority of machines that were designed to perform in an apartment WITHOUT such a hookup had review after review complaining of poor cleaning, high energy usage, breaking down, noise, super small load capacities, and leakage. But further searching found this LG WM3431 Washer/Dryer with mostly positive reviews on the different websites. It was the answer to my prayers. (Note: Despite the negative reviews, you will NOT find a better washer/dryer combo that can operate in an apartment without venting).

The Pros

1. For apartments --It's one of only a few machines on the market that's designed to work in a small space without a traditional washer or dryer hookup. That means that the electric plug goes into any three-prong outlet in your house and the water input hose can be connected to your sink. The water outlet hose dispenses into any drain and does not dump a huge amount of water so as to overwhelm your sink or bath pipes. The dryer also doesn't need a hot air vent out a window or anything. Of the machines of this genre, I've found that the LG delivers superior performance.

2. Cleaner clothes while using less water. Also, the LG WM3431 has a sanitary cycle that cleans clothes with super hot water and has kept my whites gleaming.

3. Money --I calculated that at $1.50 per wash and $1.50 per dry, it would cost me $312 a year to do 2 small loads weekly and $468 a year to do 3 small loads weekly. The machine would pay for itself in two to three years. That's not to mention the prospect of resale and the time you save yourself from driving to the laundromat and sitting there waiting.

4. Aesthetic--the machine is beautiful.

5. Timer-- allows you to load your laundry and detergent before you leave for work and to have it start running and complete its cycle just in time for when you come home. The timer can be set for up to 19 hours later. And since this is an all-in-one machine, you obviously don't need to be home to switch the load from your washer to your dryer.

6. Protects clothing - I only found this out after going on vacation and using a regular washer and dryer for two weeks. Cheap clothes which I thought were better quality than they actually were, lost probably 1/4 their color during my vacation. I realized that the steam mechanism of the dryer, though it takes longer, is gentler on clothes than forced hot air. All my clothing has maintained the color and quality as on the day I bought it, using the LG washer/dryer combo.

The Cons

1. Time --It takes anywhere from 3-5 hours to do an entire wash and dry, depending on the options you choose. The spin cycle can add a lot of extra time. Be mindful of how you load your laundry (i.e. Put one towel on the bottom, some clothes in between, and another towel on top.) If the machine is imbalanced, it will reset and reset and try to balance the load. I've found that if you use only the low spin cycle with the sheet and towel loads, the items will still get sufficiently dry, but the machine will start spinning a lot faster.

2. Vibration --Others have complained that the machine vibrates violently. I have never had this problem. The machine really does not move or jump at all, even if it's on the very high spin.

3. Capacity --I can fit a queen fitted sheet, duvet cover, and 4 pillowcases in there, though it's a bit snug. I probably do about 2-3 loads of clothing a week (for a family of 2 adults and 1 toddler), plus an additional load every other week for sheets, towels, and tablecloths. I wouldn't recommend this machine for a much larger family, but I think that there is a larger capacity model available from LG.

4. Noise --It's actually stealthily quiet during the wash and spin cycles, humming at no louder than your air conditioner. However, the mechanism the machine employs to expel water for your rinse cycles and throughout the long drying cycle is really very loud. Sounds as loud as a car (but maybe not a motorcycle) revving its engine very loudly.

5. WRINKLES!!--Another major problem is that the way the machine dries, using a condensation method rather than hot air, leaves clothing feeling sometimes damp and often wrinkled when taken out of the machine. My clothes always feels damp when taken immediately from the machine, but 95% of the time, when you spread out the laundry, the steam dissipates and the clothes are actually dry. (Sweaters, jeans, and large items may still be truly damp, unless you've run the machine for very long.) My solution to the wrinkle problem has been to cut my losses and bring extra large items (sheets, tablecloths, dresses, and whatever else MUST be wrinkle-free) down to the basement and just pay to dry it in a regular hot air dryer. My other loads have fared well in the wrinkle department so long as you fill the fabric softener tray to the MAX with fabric softener (I use a non-scented one for this reason) and if you take the clothes out of the dryer as soon as the dry cycle ends. (The dryer continues to run on a "cool-down" mode after it's finished drying, I guess in an attempt to prevent wrinkles, but it causes more wrinkles.)

6. Door Latch--It keeps the door locked and waits 1-2 minutes before releasing it if you stop the machine mid-cycle and after it's finished drying. So you have to actually wait to pull open the door. I've had instances where I just started the machine and noticed I dropped a sock on the ground and have had to pause the machine, wait 2 minutes, then open up the door and to throw the sock in.

7. Child Lock--The only thing that changes when you put the child lock on is that it disables the start/pause button and if you turn off the machine, you cannot turn it back on w/o disabling the child lock first. However, the power button still works and the child can turn the machine off in the first place. I cannot tell you how many times my toddler has run over to the washer and turned off my machine mid-cycle by pushing the oooooh! shiny blue colored power button. And I've had to restart the machine (but only after holding down and turning off the child lock) and have the washer begin at the start of the cycle where it left off. It takes extra time this way. And boy is it annoying.

You would think that the least the child lock would keep the door latch locked so that a child cannot climb inside the washer drum. Nope. If the machine is turned off or if it has just completed wash, the door latch will unlock automatically regardless of whether the child lock is on or off. Essentially, the child lock only disables one button on the entire machine. It's pretty much useless otherwise. I wish LG could improve upon this.

8. BIGGEST DRAWBACK: Because the WM3431 does not dry clothes using hot air, there is no lint trap. Then, where does the lint/hair go? Well, some of it you'll find accumulating in the rubber gasket around the door. But small amounts of it accumulate in the condenser tube/duct that is INSIDE the machine. You have to actually disassemble the machine to get to it. (Yes, this is a major design flaw.) If your machine starts taking longer and longer to dryer (even longer than 3 hours) or doesn't dry altogether, this could be the problem. If you're brave of heart, you can disassemble the top and back covers of the machine and find the white plastic duct. Inside, you'll probably find a mass of lint/hair that's blocking the air from getting to the tub and not letting your clothes dry. Once removed, your machine will work like new. You may not want to disassemble the washer/dryer, though, as it could void a warranty. But some servicemen have said that it is a flaw in this model and recommends clearing these ducts once a year. I have had the WM3431 for 2.5 years now, and only now did I have to pull it open and clear the lint. Other ppl may have to do it more often if they have clothes that give off more lint or if they have pets that shed hair. Annoying? Definitely yes. But thank goodness, we got the free extended warranty and a serviceman cleared ducts for us. I watched him and it really wouldn't be too hard to do it myself, but, yes, it would have been better not to have to do it at all.

Bottom Line:

If you can possibly buy the traditional separate washer and dryer units, by all means, do so! But if you live in a place where there's no traditional washer/dryer hook-up available, and you're looking to buy, the LG WM3431 is the best choice on the market (ESP. over the Haier models which constantly break down). Just remember to purchase a (full coverage) extended warranty agreement and keep in mind some of my tips above. Good luck!

Customer Buzz
